some contests i might enter

glimmer train is doing this contest:

Best Start (not to exceed 1,000 words)

	Prizes: The 50 most engaging pieces will each win $50 and make Glimmer Train's Best Start list, which will be announced in our December bulletin as well as on other major blogs for writers.
	Other considerations: Reading fee is $10 per piece. Open only to new writers whose fiction has not appeared in a nationally distributed print publication with a circulation over 3,000.

i wish there were more contests like this. i like the idea of 50 different small prizes. it seems like there's a better chance to win your money back and then some.

i also wish i could enter. i am sad but it seems i am "too big" to enter (pen america's circulation is above 3,000), although this is sort of new and cool at the same time

the boston review is doing this contest, judged by chang-rae lee:

Rules: First prize is $1500 and publication in our summer 2010 issue. Entries must be 4,000 words or less, and accompanied by a $20 fee. All entrants recieve a year's subscription to Boston Review and are considered for regular publication. Our judge this year is novelist Chang-Rae Lee, and the contest is supervised, as always, by fiction editor Junot Díaz.

kick-ass artist arthur jones illustrated my one-line short story "i have a hard time having a good time" for his "the whole story project," one-line short stories illustrated onto post-it notes.

new online newspaper the faster times is featuring my interview with the novelist john wray, entitled "how to write on the subway."
